Vintage Fashion Friday: A 1920s Outfit

Fine, so I love vintage fashion.  Kinda obsessed with it. ;). So I thought for this week's Fashion Friday I'd put together a 1920s outfit.  And yes, I would walk around every single day wearing complete vintage clothes if I could (and if I could afford it.....). :). And no, I wouldn't care if people looked at me like I had two heads because I looked like I stepped out of a vintage time machine. :). So, anyway......
Let's start with this cute cloche hat:

Did I mention I lovelovelove cloche hats?!  I really want one like Kathy Selden has in Singin' in the Rain; and here's a photo for you to see :). (Although I am technically not sure if Kathy's hat is a cloche, but anyway...)
Photo credit: Um, it's a screenshot from Singin' in the Rain. :P

Ok, enough blabbering about cloche hats. ;). Here's a dress to go with it:

Etsy shop Poshporscha. Ok, fine, so I'm way, way, WAY too young to wear that dress, but isn't it so pretty??  Oh, yeah, and its like $1200.... :P Ok, lets try another dress that I could actually wear....
How about this one?

It's on sale for about $25 right now! :). How about some pretty shoes?

Aren't they just the bee's knees? ;). Fine, so I'm probably way too young to wear these too, but for a grown-up, they would look really nice with the 1920s dress two photos above, don't you think? :).

Ok, so that wraps up our Vintage Fashion Friday for this week!  Hope you enjoyed putting together 1920s outfits with me!! :)

Book Review: The Traveler's Tricks by Laurie Calkhoven

Today I am going to do a book review of the new American Girl Caroline mystery, The Traveler's Tricks. :)

Author: Laurie Calkhoven

Publisher and publishing date: American Girl; 2014

Number of pages: 184

Price and where to buy: $6.95; Barnes and Noble, American Girl (online, phone, or in store), local bookstores.

My rating overall (on 1-10 scale): 7.5

Synopsis: Caroline has an important package to deliver for her father in the big city of Albany.  That means a three-day stagecoach trip with her friend Rhonda!  The girls are fascinated by the other travelers, including a charming magician and a beautiful young woman with a sad past.  But when Caroline's precious package goes missing, she realizes the culprit has to be a fellow passenger.  She must unmask the thief––or her promise to Papa may be impossible to keep.

My opinions: It was a fun read.  I love the Caroline character, although she can be a bit impulsive sometimes.  The mystery part of the book was rather disappointing; I knew 'who had done it' about a quarter through the book.  However, the story was engaging and fun, and even though I did know who had stolen the things, I was interested to find out how she/he would be unmasked, and SPOILER SPOILER what would happen to Elizabeth Bullard, the young woman, since she hadn't stolen anything and yet still acted suspicious.SPOILERS OVER.  ;). I would read it again, but most of the AG mysteries haven't been very intriguing in the 'mystery' area, but there again, that might just be because I've read fifty gabillion Nancy Drew mysteries.  Ok, not fifty gabillion, but you get the idea. :). I would recommend this book for a fun and engaging story, but if you're looking for an intriguing mystery that will boggle your brain, that you won't find.  That being said, I do think that it was a good, solid book, with a few twists and turns you wouldn't expect.  And since I think the mysteries are longer than the regular books for the characters, and are the same price ($6.95), I in some ways like the mysteries better.

Vintage Fashion Friday: The Ballerina-Length Skirt (1950s)

The ballerina-length skirt was a popular fashion staple in the 1950s.  With World War II over, and no more rationing, different silhouettes and styles could be experimented with.  The ballerina length skirt was popular on dresses,  usually paired with a cinched waist, to give a feminine or delicate look.

Wow, only 50 cents for a pattern. ;).

The style was based on the romantic tutu length, and now that the war was over, more people could afford to go places such as the ballet or theater.  The romantic tutu has been said to have been at least introduced, if not invented, by Marie Tagilioni, most likely first in La Sylphide in 1832 or so.  Since then, its been greatly used in the ballet world, as its many layers of movable tulle allow for great use of movement.  Ok, now I'm going off on a tangent about ballet costumes. ;). Anyways:

From left to right we have: Lithograph of Marie Tagilioni in a romantic tutu (photo credit: Wikipedia.org); Margot Fonteyn in a romantic tutu in La Sylphide (photo credit: Pinterest.com); a more recent photograph of a dancer wearing a romantic tutu (photo credit: dance.net). The collage was made by me.

Also observe the similarities between a 1950s dress and a romantic tutu costume:
From left to right: Lucille Ball in I Love Lucy in the Dancing Star episode (photo credit: I Love Lucy); Margot Fonteyn in a romantic tutu in La Sylphide.  This 'collage' was also made by me.

So there you have your Vintage Fashion Friday for the week! :). I hope you enjoyed it!

Fun thrift store find

I had a fun thrift store find the other day: a full size Snowy Fairest Lalaloopsy. :). She was missing her shoes and pet, but that is ok. You can't beat $3.98! The only problem was that the thrift store people decided to write her price on her face. On her FACE!! Why did they do that  for??!!

So I tried to rub it off a little:

Which didn't particularly work. ;).  I was kind of worries it wouldn't come off, because some of those permanent markers they use in thrift stores are really permanent. ;). Thankfully, it did come off with some vinegar cleaning spray and a paper towel.  (Thanks, Mama! :) ). Snowy also had a few scuff marks on her head (seen in the above two pictures), and a sharpie worked really well for that.  You can't tell the sharpie or the scuff marks were ever there! :). Yay! All cleaned up:
Cutie <3
Thrift stores are amazing! :)
